Our Team

Elias Couto, MD

Clinical / Home Health Coordinator

Dr. Elias Couto-Barbosa completed his surgical-internship at Gainesville Florida’s Level-1 Trauma Center at the University of Florida Shands. He obtained his medical doctorate from Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico, where he graduated with Clinical Distinction. Before pursing his medical degree, he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and Microbiology with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Central Florida. After reevaluating his career goals, Dr. Couto-Barbosa will continue his medical training in Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in Infectious Diseases. Dr. Couto-Barbosa’s love for patient care is evident in all aspects of his work. His experience in caring for critically-ill patients will be a great addition to the team.

Eileen Salem

Chief Executive Officer

There is a relatively small segment of leaders in the business world who can build relationships, trust and rapport whilst generating the momentum needed to ‘get things done.’ Eileen Salem is one of those people. As Chief Executive Officer at SMS National, Eileen drives results through valuable collaborations, partnerships, and relationships.

After a successful career in public relations in 1998, Eileen returned to Central Florida and founded her first Healthcare company, Active Mobility Center.  In her 12 year tenure with Active Mobility Center, she secured numerous multi-million dollar contracts with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare and Veterans Administration. She further gained valuable experience in DME that allowed her to provide insight opportunities to resolve industry pain points in Workers’ Compensation.

Through her hands on experience with customers, she met incredible people battling with disabilities due to war or illnesses like Multiple Sclerosis. As a result, she actively supports charitable causes like the National Multiple Sclerosis, Disabled American Veterans and Wounded Warrior Project.

In 2007, Eileen continued her passion for meaningful work and acquired SMS National. Since then, she has built a team of professionals focused on doing the right thing. Her commitment to excellence has resulted in 700% growth and the development of an industry leading national provider for Workers’ Compensation.  In her free time, she enjoys traveling with her family.  She also loves to do Pilates for her mental and physical wellness, in addition to retail therapy.

Timothy Bates

Director of Operations

Timothy brings his vast knowledge of the DME and accessible home modification industries from when he owned a successful DME and respiratory company. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree after studying business and communications at the University of Alabama. He is licensed and certified as an Aging in Place Specialist, an Environmental Access Consultant and a Building Contractor. Timothy is a member of several community boards and committees.

Taryn O’Keefe

Director of Organizational Development and Provider Management

Taryn joined SMS National in 2015. Taryn comes to company with 5 years in the Workers’ Compensation industry along with 15 years in the medical field. After she graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Florida, Taryn managed multiple locations for a medical imaging company. She then embarked upon Workers’ Compensation where she led a team of Provider Relations Professionals for a large Workers’ Compensation Management Company. Taryn enjoys spending time with her family, attending live music concerts and traveling with friends.

Christopher Purpura

Business Analyst

Christopher joined the SMS team in May 2015. He graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Applied Economics with concentrations in Mathematics and Business Administration. Along with developing structuralized financial reports, he verifies that all account transactions are recorded and well organized. He formerly worked for Florida State University and created cost efficient recruitment strategies that were presented to the Associate Director, Dean and Vice President of the university. Chris currently resides in Orlando, FL, where he spends his free time running, reading, and visiting Disney World.

Heidi Velez

DME Coordinator

Heidi joined the SMS National team in 2015. She has over 10 years of customer service experience managing and mediating customer related issues. Heidi is a dedicated mom of two boys that loves working with people and providing excellent customer service. Prior to joining SMS National, she worked for a local pharmacy drugstore. 

Luz Lebron

Billing Coordinator

Luz comes to SMS National as a graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She has experience in administration for a board of education, medical operations and Worker’s Compensation. Luz enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as volunteering as a church leader in the Marriage Ministry.

Marnie Duvall

Accounts Payable Representative

Marnie joined the SMS National team in 2014 as an Accounts Payable Representative. Marnie comes to SMS National with an extensive background in banking and insurance.

Megan Cape

Intake and Transportation Coordinator

Megan joined the SMS National team in 2013. Megan is responsible for coordinating a myriad of ancillary DME services including wound care, incontinence and ostomy care, electrotherapy, CPAP, and hearing aid supplies. Megan has more than 15 years of customer service experience including Purchasing and Warehouse Manager at a South Florida DME provider.

Mike Feo

Process Manager

Mike graduated from University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s in Health Services Administration in 2003.  He worked for the Orlando Health Hospital System for 15 years before coming to SMS National in 2013.  Mike’s role as Process Manager is to lead associate training as well as oversee process improvement initiatives.

Mylene Zerega

Senior Billing Coordinator

Mylene joined SMS in 2013. She graduated 22 years ago as a Physical Therapist, with Specialization in Management in 2005 and Massage Therapist License in 2008. She’s has experience working in the insurance field and as Physical Therapist. Mylene prepares invoices for clients with special billing instructions, monitors clients’ discounts and applies charges as required; she also handles the network related with overseas cases. In addition to doing Physical Therapy work in her free time she also enjoys jogging and dance.

Steven Molloy

Home Health Coordinator

Steven joined the SMS National team, after working in direct care at the Florida Hospital for 7 years. He was the Transportation supervisor, Cardiac Monitor Tech, Health Unit Coordinator, and Nurse Tech for medical/surgical floor. Steven has been working in the Workers’ Compensation realm for over a year. In his free time he enjoys spending time with family and friends, performing outdoor activities, working in his garden and spending the evenings with his dear cat Glenda.

Vicki Cottle

Senior Clinical Coordinator

Vicki joined the SMS National team June 2014.  She has worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse since 1991. Upon earning her nursing degree from Valencia Community College an Associate of Arts, she has worked in various different fields of nursing including; Oncology, Home Health, PCU, Infertility, Labor and Delivery, NICU, Infectious Disease and Plastic Surgery.

Vanessa Rodriguez-Couto

Senior Care Coordinator

Vanessa joined the SMS National team in 2014. As the forefront of the DME department, her creative ideas and exceptional problem solving skills have been key in the growth of this high-volume department. She has been working within the scope of customer care since 2003 when she managed all aspects of Krone Furniture, a high-end furniture store, for eight years. Vanessa holds a B.A. in Business Administration in addition to an A.S. in Interior Design both from the University of Puerto Rico.

Rosa Roque

Billing Director

Rosa joined the SMS National team in 2012 to oversee the billing and account receivable teams. Rosa ensures all insurance companies are billed accurately and with the correct forms, policies and payment posting for SMS National. Rosa has a degree of Associate in Science in Educational Psychology-Special Education and an A.S. Certificate in Accounting Applications-Computerized. In her free time, Rosa enjoys early morning walks, listening to music and going to the beach.

Chelsey Ballerino

Intake Coordinator

Chelsey joined the SMS National team in March of 2015. Prior to SMS National, Chelsey worked as a medical receptionist and an intern for a Senate Page at our nation’s capital, Washington, DC. In her spare time she volunteers for the Make a Wish Foundation, Backpacks for Kids, and Salvation Army. Chelsey enjoys spending time with her toddler and family.

Crystal Betts

DME Coordinator

Crystal joined SMS National in July 2014. She brings many years of experience in the healthcare field, billing and customer service. Prior to SMS National, Crystal relocated from Corinth Mississippi where she worked for Vital Care Home Therapy and Saks.com. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Debra Hall and her skilled craftsmen did a beautiful job and left things in immaculate condition, as well as making the transformation look as if it was an integral part of the structure. The chair, a magnificent object of its kind, arrived on the specified minute yesterday, and the fellow explained how everything works so I was all set to go.
    I appreciate the efforts of all concerned. Without question, this intractable pain is worsening, and there really isn’t anything anyone can do. The shower will make my life considerably easier, and I am truly grateful.
